Identifying a True Heating Emergency

Not every heating problem requires an immediate, middle-of-the-night response. However, certain situations pose a significant risk to your property and well-being and should be addressed without delay. If you experience any of the following, it is considered a heating emergency.

Critical Signs You Need Immediate Help:

  • Suspicion of a Gas Leak: If you detect a sulfurous or rotten egg odor near your furnace, this is the most critical emergency. Evacuate your home immediately, do not use any electronics or light switches, and call your gas company and 911 from a safe distance.
  • Complete Loss of Heat: If your furnace or heat pump runs but produces no warm air, or if the system will not turn on at all during cold weather, your home can quickly reach unsafe temperatures.
  • Loud, Alarming Noises: Sounds like screeching, banging, grinding, or loud popping are not normal. These often indicate a severe mechanical failure, such as a broken blower motor or internal components coming loose, which can cause extensive damage if the system continues to run.
  • Electrical Issues: If you notice dimming or flickering lights when your heating system kicks on, or if the circuit breaker for your unit repeatedly trips, it signals a potentially dangerous electrical problem.
  • -Frozen Outdoor Unit: For heat pump users, a thin layer of frost can be normal, but if the entire outdoor unit is encased in a thick layer of ice, it indicates a serious malfunction in the defrost cycle that requires immediate attention.

Safety Measures to Take While Waiting for Assistance

Once you have determined you have an emergency, your safety is the top priority. While you wait for our technician to arrive, there are a few important steps you can take.

First, if you smell gas, your only action should be to evacuate the premises and contact emergency services. Do not attempt any of the following steps.

For non-gas-related emergencies:

  1. Turn Off the System: Go to your thermostat and switch the system to the "Off" position. This will prevent it from attempting to cycle on and potentially causing further damage. For added safety, you can also shut off the power to the unit at your home's main electrical panel.
  2. Check Your Air Filter: A severely clogged air filter can restrict airflow and cause a system to overheat and shut down. If it is visibly dirty and you can safely access it, you may note this for the technician.
  3. Ensure Vents Are Clear: Walk through your home and make sure all supply and return air vents are unblocked by furniture, rugs, or drapes. Proper airflow is essential for any heating system.
  4. Clear the Area Around the Unit: For both indoor furnaces and outdoor heat pumps, ensure there is at least two feet of clear space around the unit, free of debris, storage boxes, or yard waste.

Specialized Repairs for Furnaces and Heat Pumps

South Tampa homes utilize various heating systems, and our technicians possess the expertise to handle emergencies for all of them.

Emergency Furnace Repair: Furnaces can experience failures related to the ignition system, gas valve, or blower assembly. Common emergency repairs include replacing faulty ignitors or flame sensors, repairing or replacing malfunctioning blower motors that prevent air circulation, and addressing limit switch issues that cause the system to shut down for safety reasons.

Emergency Heat Pump Repair: Heat pumps are sophisticated systems that work year-round. Common emergencies include compressor failure, which is the heart of the system, refrigerant leaks that prevent proper heat transfer, and reversing valve malfunctions that leave the unit stuck in cooling mode. In our Florida climate, a failure of the defrost control board is another frequent emergency, leading to the unit freezing over and ceasing to function. Our technicians are adept at diagnosing and resolving these complex heat pump issues promptly.

Customer Reviews

We recently moved to Florida and needed major repairs to our church. After researching several companies, I went with Sunstate and I’m so thankful I did. Joe came out and provided us with the information necessary to make an informed decision and provided a reasonable estimate. We had a new unit installed, duct work repaired, and new thermostat installed. If you’re reading this review and wondering who to trust for your AC needs, please call Sunstate.

Great job replacing both the condensing unit and air-handler.  Moved the air-handler from the attic to the garage and re-designed and installed new duct work to accommodate the move.  Works great and no more worries about overflowing drain pan damaging the ceiling and wood floors.  Not to mention making it easier to maintain the AH unit.  The guys worked through the night to make sure the AC was back on before they left the job.   Thanks for a job well done.

Sunstate mechanical is truly the best contractors I have experienced since I moved into my house 30 years ago.  I have been dealing with Joe and his crew for over 11 years now. They are a trustworthy, respectful, experienced crew who works with you and gives you a fair value.  They just completed a big job replacing my A/C, gas furnance and condenser.  They did an excellent job, no short cuts, made sure everything was functional, and cleaned up the area nicely before they left.

Sunstate Mechanical are absolutely one of the best.  I have had two new units installed from them, and the work they did was spectacular.  The crew was prompt (even called ahead to confirm the appointment), incredibly professional, and they left the area around the air handler somehow cleaner than when they arrived.  I have had no issues with my units over the years because Sunstate Mechanical took the time to do it right the first time.
