Recognizing a True Heating Emergency

While any loss of heat is a problem, certain symptoms indicate a critical failure that requires immediate professional attention. Delaying a call can lead to more extensive damage or create unsafe living conditions. If you experience any of the following issues with your furnace or heat pump, it is crucial to seek emergency service.

No Heat or Blowing Cold AirThe most obvious sign of a breakdown is a complete lack of warm air. If your system is running but only circulating cold or room-temperature air, it points to a significant issue with the heat source, such as a failed ignition system, a malfunctioning gas valve, or a problem with the heating elements.

Strange or Loud NoisesYour heating system should operate with a consistent, low hum. Sudden, loud noises are a clear warning sign.

  • Banging or Booming: This often indicates a delayed ignition in a gas furnace, where gas has built up before igniting. This is a serious issue that requires immediate shutdown and repair.
  • Squealing or Screeching: High-pitched sounds typically point to a problem with a worn-out belt or failing motor bearings. If left unaddressed, this can lead to a complete motor seizure.
  • Grinding or Scraping: Metal-on-metal sounds often mean a component in the blower assembly has broken or become loose, creating a dangerous situation that could destroy the motor.

Unusual Odors from VentsStrange smells coming from your heating system should never be ignored.

  • Rotten Egg or Sulfur Smell: If you have a gas furnace, this smell is a major red flag for a potential gas leak. If you smell gas, evacuate your home immediately. Do not use any electronics or light switches. Once you are safely outside, call your gas utility company to report the leak, and then contact us for the emergency repair.
  • Burning or Electrical Smells: A dusty smell is common when you first turn on your heat for the season. However, a persistent smell of burning plastic, rubber, or wiring indicates an overheating motor or a serious electrical fault that poses a fire hazard.

Frequent Cycling or Constant RunningA furnace or heat pump that turns on and off in rapid succession (short-cycling) or runs continuously without reaching the set temperature is working inefficiently. This not only drives up your energy bills but also puts extreme strain on the components, leading to premature failure.

Customer Reviews

We recently moved to Florida and needed major repairs to our church. After researching several companies, I went with Sunstate and I’m so thankful I did. Joe came out and provided us with the information necessary to make an informed decision and provided a reasonable estimate. We had a new unit installed, duct work repaired, and new thermostat installed. If you’re reading this review and wondering who to trust for your AC needs, please call Sunstate.

Great job replacing both the condensing unit and air-handler.  Moved the air-handler from the attic to the garage and re-designed and installed new duct work to accommodate the move.  Works great and no more worries about overflowing drain pan damaging the ceiling and wood floors.  Not to mention making it easier to maintain the AH unit.  The guys worked through the night to make sure the AC was back on before they left the job.   Thanks for a job well done.

Sunstate mechanical is truly the best contractors I have experienced since I moved into my house 30 years ago.  I have been dealing with Joe and his crew for over 11 years now. They are a trustworthy, respectful, experienced crew who works with you and gives you a fair value.  They just completed a big job replacing my A/C, gas furnance and condenser.  They did an excellent job, no short cuts, made sure everything was functional, and cleaned up the area nicely before they left.

Sunstate Mechanical are absolutely one of the best.  I have had two new units installed from them, and the work they did was spectacular.  The crew was prompt (even called ahead to confirm the appointment), incredibly professional, and they left the area around the air handler somehow cleaner than when they arrived.  I have had no issues with my units over the years because Sunstate Mechanical took the time to do it right the first time.
