Identifying a True Heating Emergency

While any loss of heat can feel like an emergency, certain situations require immediate professional attention to prevent further damage or ensure your family's safety. If you experience any of the following issues with your furnace or heat pump, it is crucial to seek emergency service:

No Heat Production: If your system is running but blowing cool or room-temperature air, or if it won't turn on at all, you have a clear problem that requires immediate diagnosis.

Suspicious Odors: A strong smell of gas or rotten eggs near your furnace is a critical emergency. You should evacuate the premises immediately and call for professional help. Other smells, like burning plastic or a strong electrical odor, also indicate a serious malfunction that needs to be addressed without delay.

Loud, Unsettling Noises: While furnaces make some noise, loud banging, screeching, or grinding sounds are abnormal. These noises often signal a severe mechanical problem, such as a broken motor bearing or a loose component, which can cause catastrophic system failure if ignored.

Carbon Monoxide Detector Activation: If your CO detector sounds an alarm, treat it as a life-threatening emergency. A malfunctioning heating system, particularly a gas furnace with a cracked heat exchanger, can release this odorless, colorless gas into your home.

Frequent or Rapid Cycling: A heater that turns on and off every few minutes without properly warming your home is short-cycling. This points to a deeper issue, such as an overheating system or a faulty sensor, that can strain components and lead to a complete breakdown.

Water Pooling Around the Unit: While some condensation is normal, a significant water leak can indicate a clogged condensate line or a more serious internal issue that could cause water damage and electrical hazards.

Important Safety Measures Before We Arrive

While you wait for our technician to arrive, there are a few steps you can take to ensure your safety and prepare for our visit.

  • If You Smell Gas: This is the most critical rule. Do not touch any light switches or electronics. Leave the house immediately, and from a safe distance, call your gas company's emergency line first, then call us.
  • Check the Thermostat and Breaker: For non-gas related issues, you can safely check that your thermostat is set to "heat" and that the corresponding circuit breaker has not been tripped.
  • Do Not Attempt DIY Repairs: Opening a furnace or heat pump without proper training can be dangerous, risking electrical shock or further damage to the unit. Please leave the technical work to our certified professionals.
  • Clear the Area: Ensure there is a clear, unobstructed path to your heating unit so our technician can access it safely and begin work immediately.

Customer Reviews

We recently moved to Florida and needed major repairs to our church. After researching several companies, I went with Sunstate and I’m so thankful I did. Joe came out and provided us with the information necessary to make an informed decision and provided a reasonable estimate. We had a new unit installed, duct work repaired, and new thermostat installed. If you’re reading this review and wondering who to trust for your AC needs, please call Sunstate.

Great job replacing both the condensing unit and air-handler.  Moved the air-handler from the attic to the garage and re-designed and installed new duct work to accommodate the move.  Works great and no more worries about overflowing drain pan damaging the ceiling and wood floors.  Not to mention making it easier to maintain the AH unit.  The guys worked through the night to make sure the AC was back on before they left the job.   Thanks for a job well done.

Sunstate mechanical is truly the best contractors I have experienced since I moved into my house 30 years ago.  I have been dealing with Joe and his crew for over 11 years now. They are a trustworthy, respectful, experienced crew who works with you and gives you a fair value.  They just completed a big job replacing my A/C, gas furnance and condenser.  They did an excellent job, no short cuts, made sure everything was functional, and cleaned up the area nicely before they left.

Sunstate Mechanical are absolutely one of the best.  I have had two new units installed from them, and the work they did was spectacular.  The crew was prompt (even called ahead to confirm the appointment), incredibly professional, and they left the area around the air handler somehow cleaner than when they arrived.  I have had no issues with my units over the years because Sunstate Mechanical took the time to do it right the first time.
