Is It Time to Replace Your Furnace?

Furnaces don't last forever. Recognizing the signs of a furnace nearing the end of its life can save you from unexpected breakdowns and potential safety hazards. Consider replacing your furnace if you notice any of the following:

  •  Age: Most furnaces have a lifespan of 15-20 years. If yours is older than 15, it's wise to start planning for replacement.
  •  Frequent Repairs: Constantly calling for repairs? The cost of fixing an old system can quickly add up, often exceeding the cost of a new, more efficient unit.
  •  Rising Energy Bills: An inefficient, aging furnace has to work harder to heat your home, consuming more fuel and driving up your utility costs.
  •  Inconsistent Heating: Cold spots in certain rooms or uneven temperatures throughout your home can indicate your furnace is losing its ability to distribute heat effectively.
  •  Strange Noises or Smells: Banging, rattling, whining, or scraping sounds aren't normal. Neither are persistent dusty or metallic odors, or smells like rotten eggs (potentially a gas leak – call for emergency service immediately if you suspect a leak!).
  •  Visible Rust or Cracks: Any signs of corrosion or cracks on the furnace's heat exchanger are serious and can pose a carbon monoxide risk.

Choosing between repairing and replacing can be tough. A common guideline is the "$5,000 rule": multiply the cost of the repair by the age of the furnace. If the total is over $5,000, replacement is likely the more cost-effective long-term solution. However, even smaller repairs on an old unit might signal it's time to invest in a new system.

Understanding Your Heating Options

When replacing your furnace, you'll have several options to consider. The most common types include:

  •  Gas Furnaces: Highly popular in many areas, gas furnaces use natural gas or propane to generate heat. They are known for powerful, consistent heating.
  •  Electric Furnaces: A good option where natural gas isn't available. While the unit cost might be lower, the operating costs can be higher depending on electricity rates.

Understanding AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is key to choosing an energy-efficient model. AFUE measures how efficiently a furnace converts fuel into usable heat over a year. A higher AFUE percentage means greater efficiency and lower energy bills. Modern furnaces are significantly more efficient than older models, offering substantial savings over their lifetime.

We'll help you navigate options like single-stage, two-stage, or modulating furnaces, considering your home's size, insulation, and heating needs to recommend a system that provides optimal comfort and efficiency.

Our Professional Furnace Replacement & Installation Process

At Sunstate Mechanical Contractors, Inc., we follow a meticulous process to ensure your new furnace is installed correctly, safely, and efficiently.

  1. Initial Consultation & Assessment: We visit your home to assess your current system, discuss your heating needs and budget, and perform a detailed load calculation to determine the perfect size and type of furnace for your space. This prevents issues like short-cycling or inadequate heating.
  2. System Recommendation: Based on our assessment, we recommend the best furnace options tailored to your home and preferences, explaining the benefits of each.
  3. Preparation & Old Unit Removal: We carefully prepare the installation area, lay down drop cloths, and safely disconnect and remove your old furnace and associated components, ensuring proper disposal.
  4. New Furnace Installation: Our certified technicians expertly install your new furnace, making all necessary connections to the gas line (if applicable), electrical supply, venting, and ductwork. We ensure everything meets local codes and manufacturer specifications.
  5. Testing, Calibration & Safety Checks: We thoroughly test the newly installed system to ensure it's operating correctly, calibrate it for optimal performance, and conduct critical safety checks, including verifying no gas leaks or carbon monoxide emissions.
  6. Site Clean-up & Customer Walkthrough: We clean up the work area completely, leaving your home as tidy as we found it. We then walk you through the new system, explaining its operation, features, and maintenance requirements.

Why Choose Professional Installation? (And Why DIY is Risky)

While replacing a furnace might seem like a daunting task, it's crucial to trust the job to trained professionals. Attempting a DIY installation is not only complex but carries significant risks:

  •  Safety Hazards: Improper installation can lead to dangerous gas leaks, electrical fires, or deadly carbon monoxide poisoning. Professionals are trained to handle these safely.
  •  Inefficiency: Incorrect sizing or poor installation can cause your furnace to run inefficiently, leading to higher energy bills and premature system failure, negating the benefits of a new unit.
  •  Code Compliance & Permits: Furnace installations require permits and must meet strict local building codes. Professionals handle this to ensure your system is safe and legal.
  •  Warranty Protection: Most manufacturer warranties are void if the furnace isn't installed by a certified professional. Protect your investment by choosing expert service.
  •  Expertise & Experience: Our technicians have the knowledge and tools to handle unexpected challenges, ensuring the job is done right the first time.

"Quality without shortcuts - done by the book, backed with pride." This isn't just a slogan; it's how we approach every installation.

Understanding the Investment: Furnace Replacement & Installation Costs

The cost of a new furnace and installation can vary widely depending on several factors:

  •  Furnace Type and Efficiency (AFUE rating): Higher efficiency models cost more upfront but save significantly on energy bills over time.
  •  Size (BTU output): The heating capacity needed for your home impacts the unit cost.
  •  Complexity of Installation: Factors like relocating the furnace, modifying ductwork, upgrading venting, or complex electrical/gas line work can affect labor costs.
  •  Permits and Local Codes: Necessary permits add to the overall cost.
  •  Optional Upgrades: Adding a smart thermostat or improving indoor air quality components can affect the total price.

Due to these variables, providing an exact cost without an in-home assessment is impossible. We provide transparent quotes after evaluating your specific needs and home requirements during a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : How long does furnace installation take?

A : A standard furnace replacement typically takes one day. More complex jobs involving ductwork modifications or system upgrades may take longer. We'll give you an estimate during your consultation.

Q : How much does furnace replacement cost?

A :Costs vary based on furnace type, size, efficiency, home specifics, and labor. We provide accurate quotes after a free in-home assessment.

Q : Can I replace just the furnace, or do I need a new AC too?

A : You can often replace just the furnace (the indoor unit of a split system). However, if your air conditioner (outdoor unit) is also old, replacing both at the same time as part of a new HVAC system can improve overall system efficiency and performance and may be more cost-effective in the long run.

Q : Is a new furnace a tax write-off or eligible for rebates?

A : High-efficiency furnaces may qualify for federal tax credits, manufacturer rebates, or local utility incentives. We can provide information on potential incentives during your consultation.

Q : How often should I replace my furnace filter?

A :It's generally recommended to replace standard filters every 1-3 months, but this can vary depending on the filter type, system usage, and household conditions (e.g., pets, allergies). We can advise on the best filter schedule for your new system.

Customer Reviews

We recently moved to Florida and needed major repairs to our church. After researching several companies, I went with Sunstate and I’m so thankful I did. Joe came out and provided us with the information necessary to make an informed decision and provided a reasonable estimate. We had a new unit installed, duct work repaired, and new thermostat installed. If you’re reading this review and wondering who to trust for your AC needs, please call Sunstate.

Great job replacing both the condensing unit and air-handler.  Moved the air-handler from the attic to the garage and re-designed and installed new duct work to accommodate the move.  Works great and no more worries about overflowing drain pan damaging the ceiling and wood floors.  Not to mention making it easier to maintain the AH unit.  The guys worked through the night to make sure the AC was back on before they left the job.   Thanks for a job well done.

Sunstate mechanical is truly the best contractors I have experienced since I moved into my house 30 years ago.  I have been dealing with Joe and his crew for over 11 years now. They are a trustworthy, respectful, experienced crew who works with you and gives you a fair value.  They just completed a big job replacing my A/C, gas furnance and condenser.  They did an excellent job, no short cuts, made sure everything was functional, and cleaned up the area nicely before they left.

Sunstate Mechanical are absolutely one of the best.  I have had two new units installed from them, and the work they did was spectacular.  The crew was prompt (even called ahead to confirm the appointment), incredibly professional, and they left the area around the air handler somehow cleaner than when they arrived.  I have had no issues with my units over the years because Sunstate Mechanical took the time to do it right the first time.
